XJAMES HETFIELDX: SINGER OF METALLICA STRAIGHT EDGE

James: Right. Well, straight edge, this was certainly a design of my own. You know, the old straight edge tattoo, it’s just like a big X on your hand. No drinking, and I don’t drink. It’s like when you go into the clubs, they put and X on your hand…
SO WHAT: Right. It’s because you haven’t shown your ID.
James: And I don’t need drink or drugs. That’s straight edge life. Obviously I’m not straight edge – a true, hardcore straight edge has never had any of it in her or her whole life. But I’m a reborn straight edge.

MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD GUITARIST RUNNING FOR NEW YORK OFFICE?

It's not official yet, but all signs are pointing to Justin Brannan, guitarist for Indecision and Most Precious Blood, challenging incumbent state senator Marty Goldman in the coming election.
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle -- BAY RIDGE – Tuning up a possible campaign run to be the Democratic Party candidate to unseat long-serving Republican state Sen. Marty Golden in southwest Brooklyn is rock guitarist, voice actor, fundraiser and webmaster Justin Lee Brannan.
He pitched his cause for grassroots leadership change and Albany reform at a recent meeting of the Brooklyn Democrats for Change in Bay Ridge, a candidates’ night that included Democrat candidate Mike DiSanto, who had spoken to the progressive Democratic club earlier this year, in the audience.
“We need a new brand of invigorated leadership,” said Brannan, 31, a founding member of Indecision and Most Precious Blood, rock bands that have toured the country and world. He noted that he “sees great changes in the community. We need an advocate, not a politician with an insatiable ego. We need new leadership in the face of a dysfunctional state government in Albany.”

THE TRUE ORGIN OF EASTER

Sorry bible thumpers.
Easter celebrations were held hundreds of years before Christ was born as festivals of spring honoring Eostre, the great mother goddess of the Saxons. This name was fashioned after the ancient word for spring, Eastre. The goddess Ostara was the Norse equivalent whose symbols were the hare and the egg. From this comes our modern tradition of celebrating Easter with eggs and bunnies.
In the Mediterranean region, there was a pre-Christian spring celebration centered around the vernal equinox (March 20 or 21) that honored Cybele, the Phrygian goddess of fertility. Cybele’s consort, Attis, was considered born of a virgin and was believed to have died and been resurrected three days later. Attis derived his mythology from even earlier gods, Osiris, Dionysus, and Orpheus, who also were supposed to have been born of a virgin and suffered death and resurrection as long as 500 years before Christ was born. The death of Attis was commemorated on a Friday and the resurrection was celebrated three days later on Sunday.
There are other Easter traditions that are pagan in origin. The Easter sunrise service is derived from the ancient pagan practice of welcoming the sun on the morning of the spring equinox, marking the beginning of spring. What we now call Easter lilies were revered by the ancients as symbols of fertility and representative of the male genitalia. The ancient Babylonian religions had rituals involving dyed eggs as did the ancient Egyptians.
The Christian version of Easter is celebrated after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Modern day neo-pagans usually have their spring celebrations on the day of the equinox. Either way, these celebrations have gone on every year continuously for over 2500 years. So, next Sunday, if you go to an Easter sunrise service, hunt for colored eggs or eat marshmallow bunnies, remember you are indulging in pagan rituals that celebrate fertility and the advent of springtime!

108 NOT BREAKING UP AFTER ALL

Well, turns out the everyone (including the band) spoke too soon and the resurrection of 108 is already underway.
"108 has not broken up. Rasaraja [aka Robert Fish] has left the band, but 108 will continue in full force with a new direction and focus. We will be writing, recording and playing shows this year to support 18.61 and create new music."
So does this mean that Vic is back on vocals? Who knows? Apparently no one.

108 CALLS IT QUITS FOR THE SECOND TIME

108 confirmed earlier today that they have indeed thrown in the towel. Last night, the band made a post on their Facebook page that read simply "108 has died" and later on "their [sic] MIGHT be a 'bye-bye' show sometime. That will be it.
"Unfortunate news since Deathwish was set to release (and still will, most likely) the new record, 18.61, on April 13. The band had planned to do a few small tours in support of the record, but obviously that's off the table now.
This is the second time the band has broken up. They reunited around 2005 and released the album A New Beat From A Dead Heart in 2007 and toured sporadically after that. 18.61 has, reportedly, been finished for nearly a year but Deathwish only recently added it to the release schedule.

"So hydrogen man is putting out a tape for us, I believe it will come with a download card too. We recorded 3 songs live, no tracking, no pro tools, but it is mastered, and it's heavy stuff. I think for a live recording the songs came out great.
Our tour kickoff is Thursday, so I posted the first new song on our myspace today. On Tuesday I will take it down and put up the next. Wednesday I'll put the last song up. Thursday there will be tapes available at our show.

SICK OF IT ALL: NEW TUNES

As you hopefully already know, seminal New York City hardcore outfit Sick Of It All will release their Century Media Records debut on April 20th. Their first new release in four years, the effort is titled "Based On A True Story" and we have obtained a track from the album to exclusively unveil today. The song is called "Death or Jail" and Sick Of It All drummer Armand Majidi has provided the following background:
"We wrote the song 'Death or Jail (based on a true story)' about friends of ours that broke away and ended up following a path that led them to self-destruction or incarceration. We all know people who have made these huge mistakes, and it's a really difficult thing to explain, especially when they come from the same place and common background. They don't just turn their backs on their friends, it's as if they're turning their backs on themselves, shutting themselves into a reality that can offer nothing but stress, violence, and wickedness. Thank goodness we had the outlet of hardcore to help us vent our frustrations, or we all might have found ourselves in a similar place. This song is dedicated to those friends that we wish could have made better choices."
Check it out here.

NEW VISION OF DISORDER: ALMOST DONE
"I wanted to let you guys know that we have managed to write about 19 songs for the new LP. We are gonna pick about 11. The 11 tracks will be pulled apart, re worked and edited. We then will hit the studio and record them bitches straight up and raw. We are gonna do most of the tracks live right then and there. All in the same room spread out in a circle of smoke, brew and burgers… We hope to have it out sometime within the next 6 months."
Hoping it's good.

ALL THAT REMAINS SINGER FILLS IN FOR KILLSWITCH ENGAGE
Speaking of replacement singers, Killswitch Engage frontman Howard Jones recently left the bands current tour amid a flurry of rumors that he had either been fired or quit. The remaining band members have been pretty quiet about it for the last week while All That Remains singer Phil Labonte filled in.
Killswitch Engage released a statement on the situation that you can read here.
Sounds like Jones will be out for a while and Labonte will be in.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW VALENTINES DAY CAME TO BE

The Story behind St. Valentines Day is a fascinating one. Although February 14th is celebrated as a lovers' holiday today, with the giving of candy, flowers, Valentine's Day card and other gifts between couples in love, it originated as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop.
As early as the fourth century B.C., the Romans engaged in an annual young man's rite of passage to the God Lupercus. It's earliest orgin was the Roman festival Lupercalia, observed on Feb. 15. Lupercalia celebrated the coming of Spring on the Roman calendar. Lupercalia became a celebration intended to ensure the fertility of flocks, fields and people.
The names of the teenage women were placed in a box and drawn at random by adolescent men; thus, a man was assigned a woman companion (a sexual partner) for the duration of the year, after which another lottery was staged. After eight hundred years of this cruel practice, the early church fathers sought to end this practice.
In an effort to do away with the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius ordered a slight change in the lottery. Instead of the names of young women, the box would contain the names of saints. Both men and women were allowed to draw from the box, and the game was to emulate the ways of the saint they drew during the rest of the year. Needless to say, many of the young Roman men were not too pleased with the rule changes.
Instead of the pagan god Lupercus, the Church looked for a suitable patron saint of love to take his place. They found an appropriate choice in Valentine, who, in 270 AD had been beheaded by Emperor Claudius.
According to church tradition, St. Valentine was a priest near Rome. At that time the Roman Emperor, Claudius II, had issued an edict forbidding marriage. Claudius had determined that married men made poor soldiers because they were emotionally attached to their families. So he banned marriage from his empire.
Valentine, a bishop , seeing the trauma of young lovers, met with them in a secret place, and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. When Claudius found out about this "friend of lovers," Valentine was thrown in jail and condemned to death.
While Valentine was in prison awaiting his fate, he befriended his jailer, Asterius, who had a blind daughter. Asterius' daughter befriended the kind priest by bringing food and messages to him. Valentine fell in love with the jailer's daughter. Asterius requested that he heal his daughter. Through his faith he miraculously restored the sight of Asterius' daughter and converted the two of them to Christianity.
After some time in prison the priest was ordered to appear before the Emperor. The emperor, impressed with the young priest's dignity and conviction, first tried to convert him to paganism to save him from certain execution. But Valentine reversed the strategy, trying instead to convert Claudius. He failed. Just before his execution, he asked for pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to the jailer's daughter and signed it, "From Your Valentine." He was stoned and beheaded on February 24, 270 AD.
Valentine become a Patron Saint, and spiritual overseer of the annual festival. Although the lottery for women had been banned by the church, the mid-February holiday in commemoration of St. Valentine, involved young Romans offering women they admired and wished to court, handwritten greetings of affection on February 14th.
The greetings eventually acquired the St. Valentine's name. One of the earliest cards was sent in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time. The card is now preserved in the British Museum.

NAZI GROUP ADOPTS STRETCH HIGHWAY NEAR BRIGHTON

An Adopt-A-Highway sign for the National Socialist Movement
A church along Highway 85 in the northeastern part of the Denver metro area is uncomfortable with the message of group that has just adopted a stretch of their highway.
The National Socialist Movement, who also calls itself America's Nazi Party, applied to participate in the Colorado Department of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway program.
"We're here. We're active. We're doing good things," Lochbuie resident Neal Land, a spokesman for the group, told CBS4's Howard Nathan.
The white supremacist group will be responsible for picking up trash along a 1 mile stretch of the highway south of Bromley Lane in Brighton. A sign is already up in the area with the group's name on it.

UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US
"UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US is a stunning, voyeuristic window into the morbid world of Norwegian black metal, the most malevolent musical genre in existence, whose surprisingly articulate founders hold complex sets of extreme nationalist, anti-Semitic and anti-Christian beliefs. Unlike musical purveyors of evil who do so only for the sake of showmanship, these young friends actually practice what they preach, engaging in rampant church burning, suicide, and – as notoriously chronicled in the European media – murder.

SET IT STRAIGHT REUNION - MARCH 20

Set It Straight will be reuniting to play a benefit show for a friend's recently deceased family member on March 20 in Redding, CA. There will be a CD of unreleased material (b-sides, covers, etc.) available at the show. The details are still being worked out, but here's a statement from the group's bass player, Nate that was posted on the Bridge Nine message board.
"Yes we are playing. Yes, that is the date. Yes, we did just break up a little over two years ago. A very close friend of everyone in the band recently had a family member pass and we were asked to play to raise some funds for their needs. It was said by this band that there would never be any reunions of any sort, but this is not for us. It is for our friend, and we are helping him and family out in their time of need. I honestly can't think of any other reason as to why would play a show as Set it Straight anymore except for this. Every band is playing for free, and the venue is not collecting. ALL MONEY GOES TO THE FAMILY.
As far as the cd goes, there will be no profit for the band, label, or venue. I was unaware that the cd will be given away, but I would strongly suggest that a donation based price be set up for raising more money for our friend. It will contain mostly live tracks from our last show, some b sides, and maybe some tracks from a Youth of Today live set we did at Gilman.
As far as Harry not being edge anymore, you'll have to take it up with him. We are all still good friends and we support him in his life decisions. It would be good for those of you that are about to pass judgement to contact him personally and find out why he made the decisions he did instead of just posting your comments on this board. He would be more than happy to explain himself to any of you. Get a hold of him via our Myspace page if you really want to take that step.
As far as bands goes, I believe the show is already booked solid. We only had a meeting about this shit a couple days ago, and nothing official has been posted yet. I didn't think word would spread this fast. Bands TBA I guess. Thanks to anyone who has expressed interest, and tell everyone you know to come out and support a family in need.
Nate"

WARNER BROTHERS RECORDS DROPS GALLOWS
"We are the British music industry's biggest mistake," Gallows frontman Frank Carter told me 12 months ago during an interview promoting their second album, Grey Britain. Carter was responding to a question about how a punk band reacts when they've just signed a £1m record deal with Warner Music.
Rather than popping the champagne corks though, Carter was in the kind of articulate, unflinching mood that has made him a favourite interviewee for music journalists. Signed off the back of their live reputation and scorching 2006 debut Orchestra of Wolves – a punk/hardcore hybrid recorded by their mate in a house in the home counties – Gallows hit the jackpot with a lucrative deal when few bands were getting advances. And they were smart enough to know that, in many ways, it was all downhill from there. For a group that recalled second-wave UK punk bands like Discharge, it was the most brilliantly ridiculous major-label signing of recent times. "We see other bands being told what to do by their paymasters, but we're not one of them," guitarist Laurent Barnard said during the same interview.
