Second 16th Street Mall shuttle catches fire

A shuttle bus on the 16th Street Mall in Denver caught fire this morning, the second such fire in eight days.
No one was injured in this morning's incident.
The bus smoked and caught fire at about 6:15 a.m. at the turnaround station at Broadway, said Daria Serna, an RTD spokeswoman.
"Our crew saw lots of flame roiling under the bus," said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.
All passengers were off the bus when the fire broke out, Serna said, and Denver firefighters quickly put out the blaze.
The fire ignited in an area of the bus that stores batteries, the same area in which a fire started on another shuttle bus last week. No one was injured in the July 7 fire. The driver pulled the bus off the mall and onto Tremont Place in that incident.
RTD is currently refurbishing its shuttle fleet, Serna said. She didn't know whether the two buses that caught fire had already been worked on or whether they were awaiting a makeover.
